Introduction and Description
On this page the user will find information regarding library literacy lesson instruction that has been developed and implemented by Leah Stone. Two library lessons are presented. One lesson is tied to literacy instruction and the other is tied to academic content. On this page the user will also find a YouTube video showing one of the library lesson videos in action. Photos of the progress of the lesson and evidence used as assessments for student learning and understanding is also included on this page.
Library Lesson I
This first library lesson deals with academic content. The students are will learn the academic terms critical thinking, describe, relevant, decipher, seek, collaborate, and simple note taking. By first introducing the subject to students through the use of poetry or fiction, students become excited about the information and see that the research they are doing can be applied to other areas of their life. It also allows the student time to access their background information and begin to connect with the current instruction. Below is a YouTube video of the lesson and a link to the library lesson plan itself.

Library Lesson II
The second example of a library lesson is specifically a literature lesson. The lesson is geared towards 5th graders and focuses on the book "Smile" by Raina Telgemeier. In this lesson students will explore the concept of memoirs and narrative writings. In addition, students will be able to use research strategies to fact check an actual natural disaster that takes place in the book. The lesson is designed to take one or two library lessons to accomplish, depending on the length of library time. The librarian and classroom teacher will co-teach the lesson and the use of graphic organizers and technology has been employed to help enhance the lesson and provide students the opportunity to exercise their information and technology literacy skills.
